Migrant boat disaster off Italy leaves 71 missing

EuroWire, LAMPEDUSA: Thirty-two migrants were rescued and two bodies were recovered after a boat that set off from Libya ran into trouble near Italy over the Easter weekend, with 71 others reported missing, according to rescue groups involved in the operation. The survivors and the dead were transferred from two merchant ships to an Italian Coast Guard patrol vessel and taken to Lampedusa, the southern Italian island that often serves as the first landing point for people attempting the central Mediterranean crossing.

Rescue groups Mediterranea Saving Humans and Sea-Watch said survivors told rescuers that 105 people had been aboard the vessel before it capsized. Based on those accounts, 71 people remained unaccounted for after 32 survivors were pulled from the water and two bodies were recovered. Italian authorities had not publicly confirmed the missing figure by Sunday, leaving the full toll dependent on survivor testimony as emergency crews and aid groups worked to establish the sequence of events.

The rescue unfolded in rough conditions that have added to the danger of departures from North Africa in recent days. Video released by Sea-Watch showed several people clinging to an overturned orange craft as a large commercial vessel approached to help. The use of merchant ships in the response underlined the urgency of the distress call and the role that passing vessels can play when migrant boats run into trouble far from shore in one of the world’s deadliest sea routes.

    Survivor accounts define toll

The latest shipwreck came just days after another deadly rescue south of Lampedusa, where the Italian Coast Guard said it recovered 19 bodies and saved 58 people from a dinghy in distress in the Libyan search and rescue zone. That earlier operation was carried out in severe weather and highlighted the conditions facing overcrowded boats making the passage from North Africa toward Europe. Together, the incidents have sharpened attention on a renewed run of fatalities in the waters around Italy’s southern frontier.

Lampedusa remains a focal point for arrivals along the central Mediterranean corridor because of its location between North Africa and mainland Europe. Boats leaving the North African coast often attempt the crossing in fragile and overcrowded vessels, leaving passengers exposed to high winds, cold water and long stretches without assistance. In the latest case, the rescued migrants were brought ashore after the transfer to the coast guard patrol vessel, while aid groups used survivor accounts to determine how many people had boarded before the boat went down.

    Mediterranean route stays deadly

The International Organization for Migration has said at least 683 people have died on the central Mediterranean route so far in 2026, making this one of the highest death tolls for this stage of the year since 2014. The figure reflects the persistent risks on a route where vessels can disappear with little trace and where official counts often take time to establish. Fatal incidents are frequently reconstructed from survivor accounts because many crossings are not independently tracked from departure to rescue.

United Nations data also shows that 6,168 people had reached Italy by sea in 2026 as of the latest weekly update published on March 29, underscoring that crossings have continued despite repeated shipwrecks and difficult weather. In the latest case near Lampedusa, the rescue count and the number missing remained centered on what survivors told aid groups after they were brought to safety, while authorities had yet to publicly verify a final balance of lives saved and lost. – By Content Syndication Services.
