Based on those accounts, 71 people remained unaccounted for after 32 survivors were pulled from the water and two bodies were recovered. That earlier operation was carried out in severe weather and highlighted the conditions facing overcrowded boats making the passage from North Africa toward Europe. Lampedusa remains a focal point for arrivals along the central Mediterranean corridor because of its location between North Africa and mainland Europe.
