VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is advancing with BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the country’s largest satellite to date. The mission aims to observe interference that affects global navigation satellite systems from low Earth orbit. Its sensors will mainly target jamming and spoofing activities impacting services like GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch this approximately 32-kilogram satellite on a Falcon 9 rocket in February 2027.

BEACONSAT set to become Austria’s first military satellite
BEACONSAT is planned for a February 2027 launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9.

The purpose of the mission is to identify locations where navigation signals are disrupted and provide data for military and technical analysis. Jamming involves radio signals that weaken or block reception, while spoofing transmits false signals that can mislead navigation devices. These interferences threaten systems used in aviation, shipping, transportation, and other industries.

Austria’s Defence Ministry considers BEACONSAT a technology demonstration within its expanding military space program. The satellite will test techniques for detecting navigation interference from space and gather data on affected regions. Officials connect the project to Austria’s efforts in satellite navigation, communications, and space-based reconnaissance. The ministry adopted a military space strategy in 2023, setting development goals through 2035 and beyond.

European and Austrian Technologies Power the Satellite

GATE Space leads the BEACONSAT project, providing its propulsion system, structure, and thermal management solutions. The Austrian firm, a 2022 spin-off from TU Wien, specializes in spacecraft propulsion. Its technology has completed over 8,000 hot-fire tests in atmospheric and vacuum environments. The project received roughly 750,000 euros from Austria’s public funds for technology advancement.

Additional partners deliver systems essential for the satellite’s navigation-monitoring mission. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies interference detection and analysis tech for global navigation satellite systems. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides further hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency supports the project via its Marketplace program, which helps demonstration missions test commercial space technologies in real-world conditions.

First Austrian Military Satellite Mission to Launch in 2027

BEACONSAT will focus on collecting interference data. It is not equipped with weapons or offensive systems. The satellite will observe signals from orbit to detect patterns linked to jamming and spoofing. In 2026, project information indicated the Defence Ministry’s investment at about 1 million euros. The satellite’s initial role will be as a research and technology demonstration platform after its 2027 deployment.

Austria anticipates its first military satellite mission to commence with the February 2027 launch. SpaceX will launch BEACONSAT into orbit on a Falcon 9, as per the announced schedule. Once in space, the satellite will gather information about disruptions in satellite navigation services and transmit data for analysis. This program provides Austria with an orbital system dedicated to studying GNSS interference and testing space technologies for military and security purposes.
