HÜRTGENWALD / RankWire.AI / – German authorities ordered mandatory evacuations on Friday for around 1,800 residents in western Germany. The evacuation was prompted by a rapidly growing wildfire approaching homes. Official emergency reports confirmed that civil defense agencies in the municipality of Hürtgenwald directed the immediate removal of everyone from the Gey district, located in North Rhine-Westphalia near Belgium. The emergency response was activated early in the morning after fire lines came within 300 meters of the community boundary.

The fire started Thursday afternoon, burning over 25 hectares of dense forest, roughly the size of 35 football fields. Hot seasonal temperatures, dry winds, and tinder-dry vegetation sped up the fire’s spread. By overnight, the blaze had expanded to over 300 hectares of woodland. Emergency management officials issued the highest warning level through the national NINA app. Residents were advised to gather essential documents and medications before leaving.

A main shelter was set up at an elementary school in Straß to help displaced families. Regional authorities kept roads closed across Hürtgenwald to prioritize emergency vehicles and supply deliveries. Rescue teams conducted door-to-door checks to ensure all residents evacuated safely. The operations were carried out smoothly, with officials confirming full compliance.

Firefighting efforts faced difficulties because of unexploded World War II ammunition in nearby forests. Historical military activity left many unexploded bombs buried. Emergency crews reported hearing occasional detonations from buried explosives as the fire approached a former munitions depot near Düren. To prevent accidents, military vehicles from the Bundeswehr were used to clear blocked roads and create firebreaks through dense terrain.

Air support was a key part of the firefighting plan alongside ground crews. Specialized helicopters with heavy water buckets flew repeatedly, dropping water from local reservoirs onto hot spots around the fire’s edge. More than 300 responders from municipal, state, and civil agencies, along with technicians from the Technisches Hilfswerk, worked to create barriers to slow or stop the fire’s spread toward homes.

Officials from the state expressed concern about the fire’s proximity to key infrastructure and neighborhoods. Deputy Premier Mona Neubaur of North Rhine-Westphalia noted the operational challenges faced by firefighters. She confirmed that emergency funds had been activated to support local efforts to contain the blaze. The regional leadership continues to work closely with Bezirksregierung Köln to maintain command at the scene.

Emergency teams remain on alert around Gey to protect homes and prevent rekindling. Agencies monitor wind and humidity levels to assess risks to nearby towns. As the wildfire forces the evacuation of 1,800 residents, authorities pledge that emergency services will stay active until conditions are under control and the fire is fully contained.
