London / EuroWire / – A recent joint scientific investigation highlights how human-induced global warming is directly fueling the severe dryness affecting European soils. The study offers clear evidence that climate change is intensifying drought conditions across the continent. Researchers from around the world found that rising temperatures are the primary cause behind the deeply dried environment, surpassing the influence of rainfall shortages. After a historic heatwave in June, the region now faces destructive wildfires, strict water restrictions, and dwindling waterways. The research shows that higher temperatures today accelerate moisture loss from soils and water bodies, greatly increasing the risk of extreme aridity. Although spring rains fell below average, the intense heat magnified drought severity.

The World Weather Attribution group released a report explaining how rising temperatures actively deplete natural water supplies. Imperial College London researcher Mariam Zachariah pointed out that the drought is not just about less rain but also a warmer atmosphere causing bigger moisture deficits on land. This means drought risks grow even where rainfall patterns stay relatively stable. Scientists explain that a warmer atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor per degree Celsius of temperature rise. This additional capacity directly increases evaporation from soil and plants across the landscape.
Using extensive weather data and advanced models, researchers compared today’s hotter conditions with a climate 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their analysis revealed that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern europe, these same soil moisture shortages are 11 times more probable. The study also found that the probability of very high evaporative demand between April and June in western Europe is about 80 times greater. This indicates that rainfall shortages, which previously would not cause major droughts, now lead to much drier soils.
Temperatures Rise, So Does Atmospheric Thirst
ETH Zurich scientist Dominik Schumacher emphasized the early signs of soil drying in spring, even before summer starts. As temperatures go up, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, pulling moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. A relatively wet start to the year, combined with extreme heat, created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying set the stage for severe fires in several countries. The findings confirm that climate change worsens drought in Europe, shifting weather patterns into dangerous cycles.
The agricultural sector is under unprecedented pressure due to widespread soil moisture loss. Drought conditions are causing severe damage to crops across borders. France is expected to see its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, disrupting regional food supplies. Romania has lost more than one million hectares of maize, further endangering the supply chain. These domestic shortages, combined with ongoing global conflicts, could lead to higher food prices and disproportionately impact low-income households.
Water Vapor Capacity Expands with Rising Heat
Hydrological impacts add to the economic damage. Unusually low river levels are disrupting vital cargo routes. Major shipping routes face growing disruptions, highlighting the worsening water scarcity across Europe. Reduced river flows threaten energy production, especially in regions relying on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that the recent June was the hottest recorded in western Europe. Many nations are already enforcing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve supplies.
Scientists warn that drought conditions could become more frequent if global temperatures keep rising. They stress that these evaporative extremes are already happening at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming. If emissions push temperatures to 2.8 degrees Celsius, these conditions may double in likelihood. Without rapid emissions reductions, experts caution Europe faces a future of increasingly scorching and dry summers.
